SAP Clean Core Principles: Compliance Assessment and Transformation Blueprint for SAP HCM at Schwarz Digits

The Challenge: The SAP HCM landscape at Schwarz Digits was hindered by extensive custom legacy code, which caused high maintenance demands, strong architectural coupling, and increased upgrade risks. Because general Clean Core guidelines did not sufficiently address the specific technical complexities of payroll and infotype structures, the organization lacked the necessary framework to assess and prioritize system modernization. Consequently, there was a critical need for a structured classification system and a formal transformation blueprint to guide the long-term stabilization of the core environment.

My Approach: I developed a structured assessment framework based on Design Science Research to modernize the SAP HCM landscape. My approach involved analyzing all transport records from 2023 to 2025 to verify that the 2,928 audited objects represented active, evolving code rather than dead code, as higher change frequency directly correlates to increased risk and technical debt. To ensure a balanced methodology, I integrated SAP-specific extensibility KPIs with McCabe’s cyclomatic complexity metrics to quantify technical debt and architectural risk. Finally, I created a transformation blueprint that provided clear, actionable strategies to refactor, re-platform, or retire legacy code, ensuring long-term system stability.

The Impact: The research provided a repeatable, data-driven framework for modernizing complex SAP environments. By filtering for active objects through a three-year transport analysis, the study helped the organization isolate and prioritize high-risk technical debt, shifting focus away from irrelevant dead code toward areas that actually impact system stability. The integration of SAP-specific extensibility KPIs and academic complexity metrics allowed for a more precise classification of custom objects, enabling the business to make informed decisions on whether to refactor, re-platform, or retire specific components. Ultimately, this transformation blueprint served as a practical governance tool, reducing long-term upgrade risks and establishing a clearer path toward a cleaner, more maintainable SAP HCM architecture.

FI Interface Management & Monitoring

The Challenge: Supporting the AIF Task Force at Robert Bosch GmbH in Gerlingen during a critical year-end period. The team needed to resolve complex data migration issues, specifically IDoc errors, to ensure that essential financial reports and tax filings were completed on time and in compliance with regulations.

My Approach: I focused on stabilizing data flows by analyzing and documenting errors within SAP AIF (Application Interface Framework). This tool acts as a monitoring and error-handling layer, allowing technical teams to track and fix data processing issues in real-time. During the migration process, IDoc errors frequently occurred due to inconsistencies such as missing cost center assignments, incorrect bank details, or invalid organizational data that prevented the systems from communicating correctly. Beyond technical analysis, I supported project management and organized workshops for task force stakeholders, ensuring everyone was aligned on the urgent tasks required to meet year-end closing deadlines. I also built a "Docupedia," which is a clear guide that helps the team find and fix IDoc errors much faster.

The Impact: I helped the team maintain a high work rate even during busy periods. By organizing error documentation and improving communication among stakeholders, I contributed to the successful completion of year-end financial reports. My ability to quickly learn new tasks and deliver reliable, high-quality results was highly valued, and the systems I put in place significantly improved our data processing efficiency.

SAP Fiori Rollout: My Inbox App

The Challenge: Building a system where information could be pulled from various sources and displayed clearly in a user’s inbox, all while ensuring that sensitive data remained secure and accessible only to the right people.

My Approach: I served as the bridge between our backend developers, frontend team, and testers to ensure everyone stayed aligned. I gathered and clarified project requirements, defining exactly how data should move through the system and appear for the end user. A major part of my work involved setting up a secure access structure: while all employees could open the application, I designed and consulted on role-based authorizations so that only specific individuals, such as workflow managers, could view sensitive information or perform actions like approving or rejecting requests. I also established clear naming conventions for these roles across both the frontend and backend and handled the configuration of RFC connections to link our systems.

My daily work was diverse, covering both technical tasks and team coordination. I managed project timelines, effort estimates, and technical feasibility discussions with our customers. My technical duties included system configuration, development, and thorough unit testing. I also handled project management duties using Jira, provided 3rd-level technical support for complex issues, and led knowledge-sharing sessions to help our 2nd-level support team resolve common problems independently.

The Impact: I successfully coordinated three new system integrations and four successful rollouts, consistently achieving high customer satisfaction. The project’s success was further recognized when the product was awarded for "Best Maintenance and Support" at Bosch Global Software Technologies Vietnam in 2023, a testament to the stability and quality of the systems I helped manage and support.

Data Migration Project: SAP and Coupa

The Challenge: Connecting SAP and the Coupa platform to manage master data for Fast Retailing, the Japanese retail giant behind global brands like Uniqlo, GU, and Theory. The goal was to move complex financial and vendor data securely while ensuring it remained accurate and usable in the new system. This initial phase was treated as a trial project to prove our technical capabilities and the effectiveness of our migration strategy.

My Approach: I focused on building the bridge between the two platforms. I developed a custom data migration tool using VBA in Excel, which communicated with Coupa through its official APIs and secure OAuth 2.0 authentication. Using this tool, I migrated critical master data from SAP to Coupa, including supplier profiles, contact information, charts of accounts, tax identifiers, bank details, payment methods, vendor classification codes, purchase organization data, company codes, and operational address structures. Beyond the technical development, I prepared detailed training manuals and step-by-step guidelines to ensure the inhouse teams could operate the migration tool effectively and manage the data independently.

The Impact: I successfully streamlined the data transfer process between SAP and Coupa, reducing the risk of manual errors and saving significant time for the finance department. The successful execution of this trial project demonstrated the reliability of the system, which directly led Fast Retailing to sign a long-term contract, a significant win that solidified our partnership. By creating clear documentation and a functional tool, I ensured that the client’s team could handle their vendor information with greater reliability and security moving forward.
